Welcome to Our Newest Alumni

On June 10th, 372 graduates joined our ranks as alumni of Boston Latin School. During their four- or six-year enrollments, these talented students have benefitted from generous alumni and friend investments, including:

  • $1.5 million in academic and faculty support;
  • $1.1 million to enhance athletic and extracurricular programs;
  • $1 million toward technology needs;
  • $400,000 to support visual and performing arts; and,
  • $400,000 for library and media enhancements.

Thank you for all you've done to support their achievements. We wish them much success in their post-BLS pursuits! Congratulations also to BLS Latin Master Sherilyn Hausey who was honored during graduation with the 3rd annual Gerald L. Gitner '62 Award for Teaching Excellence.

Gold Again for BLS

Boston Latin earned another gold medal in U.S. News & World Report's 2013 Top High Schools in America ranking. BLS was ranked #57 nationally and #2 in New England. BLS is one of the top 500 schools nationally from nearly 22,000 public schools to earn the gold. Congratulations to the BLS faculty, staff, students and all who support our amazing school!

Invest in: Wellness Resources, Lab Equipment, JV Athletics, Publications

What do gifts that support BLS look like? They look like a visiting artist series, freshman and junior varsity athletics, new equipment for science labs, student and alumni publications in addition to wellness resources to enhance our student's personal and academic success. Make your gift through the BLSA to make a difference today.

News from the School

BLS recently won Global Green USA's 2013 Green School Makeover Competition Grand Prize! Congratulations to BLS YouthCAN and Advisor/History Master Cate Arnold for all of their hard work. The award includes $75,000 of green technologies, a $5,000 gift card from Office Depot, and $65,000 worth of technical support.

STAND in Harmony, an a capella benefit concert, was held in the Black Box Theatre in May. This year's concert featured high school groups — including BLS' own Wolftones and Wolfettes — and college groups such as the Harvard Lowkeys and BU Treblemakers. STAND is a student-led movement to end mass atrocities.

Senior Mark Favorito, a geography buff since elementary school, won The Purple Lady Prize for Passion and Proficiency in Geography, sponsored by Stuart Kaplan ’51 and Barbara "The Purple Lady" Meislin.

Program Director of Guidance and Support Services James Montague received the Harry R. Carroll Distinguished Service Award from the New England Association for College Admission Counseling.

During Kaleidoscope 2013, an after-school workshop series, students taught peer-to-peer classes about their own passions. Students offered 15 courses, from photography to fiddle, make-up to myth.

Three amazing young BLS scientists were selected for the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair with more than 70 countries, territories and regions represented. Our students' research included: 'Testing the Effectiveness of Liposomal Nanoparticle Delivery of Oxybutynin to Reduce Bladder Spasms'; 'The Effect of Stress on Reproductive System'; and 'Purification of Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Antigen and Antibody by Affinity Chromatography.'

Sixty-nine juniors and seniors were inducted into BLS' new Modern Foreign Languages honor society Societas. Two BLS students of Spanish placed first in Massachusetts in the National Spanish Exam.

Mary DeMoura '13 (softball) and Malcolm Nachmanoff '13 (baseball) were selected as All-Scholastic athletes by the Boston Globe and Boston Herald. They were both DCL MVP's as well.

Thank you to all of the alumni who support the Annual Fund each year. These student athletes, artists and scholars  depend on our support and achieve more thanks to you!

1635 Society: Planning Ahead for BLS

Join more than 150 alumni and friends that have already included a gift to Latin School in their estate plans. There are a number of ways to do this. For instance, you can name the BLSA as a beneficiary of your IRA, 401(k) or other qualified plan, just like Alan Bell '49: "Nothing in my life comes even close to the gift BLS gave me, but my IRA is a start."  Visit our website for more information on the many ways you can honor the Latin School legacy.

Amplify Your Gift with a Match

Do you work at Fidelity, State Street, Wells Fargo or one of the hundreds of other companies that match charitable contributions? Thanks to all of our alumni who reinvest in BLS through these programs effectively doubling or tripling their gifts. Check with your company today to find out if they sponsor matching gift programs.

Changing of the Guard

We are pleased to welcome two new members of the BLSA Board of Trustees: Timothy Kierstead '86 and Peter Wong '85. We extend our gratitude as well to outgoing members Rebecca Galeota '92 and Paul Toomey '86, P'18. Thank you to all of these faithful alumni for their ongoing commitment to the past, present and future generations of Boston Latin School.

A New Website for BLS/BLSA

We hope you will feel better informed and a bit more inspired after a visit to our new website. Don't miss these highlights:

  • Academics: details BLS' rigorous contemporary classical education;
  • History: describes the storied past of America's first public school; and
  • Giving: invites you to learn more about how your philanthropy and participation makes a difference every day for our students, teachers, coaches and alumni.

The BLS and BLSA shared website is made possible thanks to the generosity of our Annual Fund donors. Thank you for your support!

Points of Pride History Contest

Thank you to everyone who responded to our April question: Can you name the head master who developed the  beginnings of a library at BLS? Congratulations to Peter Swiatkowski '94 who came in first with April's correct answer: Benjamin Apthorp Gould, 1814.

Visit the Points of Pride Contest webpage to see the answers to past questions as well as all of our proud winners.

July's question:
Can you name the alumnus whose credits include: a pioneer of ether anesthesia and one of the founding fathers of Massachusetts General Hospital as well as the New England Journal of Medicine and Surgery?

Participants should send responses — including name and class year — magna cum celeritate via e-mail. We’ll be happy to reward the first correct responder with a small BLS item! Note: Alumni may win only once during an academic year.
